A terribly timed diet

George was on a diet. He had been on a diet all week, and he’d refused to eat anything but kale smoothies, bran muffins, sliced apples and and hard boiled eggs. So Amelia decided to cheer him up with a day in the country. She loved looking out at the far off mountains and enjoying the wide open sky.

“What are you thinking about?” Amelia asked George.

“I’d rather not say,” George said.

What could he possibly be thinking about that he wouldn’t say? Amelia’s mind started to spin. They hadn’t been married very long. Was he upset about something? She looked over at him in alarm.

“Please tell me,” she said.

“Fine.” George looked away from her. “I’m thinking about Philly cheese steak sandwiches, poutine, chocolate eclairs, BLTs, spaghetti and meatballs…”

“You’re hungry, George!” Amelia said. “Are you sure you don’t want a granola bar from my purse?”

“I suppose I could…” George sighed. And he ate four.

Amelia drove on the way back to town. They enjoyed the chilly, sunshiny day. Halfway home, they stopped at a gas station to use the washroom. While Amelia was washing her hands, she overheard George say,

“I’m going to get this for my wife. Thank you so much.”

What was he buying for her? She felt a little flush of happiness. George was so sweet.

But when she stepped out out of the washroom, she spotted George holding a bag of rice cakes, and she suddenly felt tears come to her eyes. He’d bought her rice cakes? Did he think SHE was putting on weight? Did he want her to lose it? She stomped out to the car, and George got in next to her.

“What’s wrong?” George asked.

“You think I’m FAT!” she said, and a big tear slipped down her cheek.

“What?” George gasped. “Never!”

“You told the worker that you bought those for me!”

“I only said that because I like being able to say ‘my wife.’ I actually got you a chocolate bar.” And George pulled it out of his pocket. “Is it time for me to stop dieting, do you think?”

“I think you’d better,” she said with a sniffle.

That weekend was American Thanksgiving. Now, George and Amelia were Canadian frogs, and they’d already celebrated Canadian Thanksgiving back in October, but many of Amelia’s colleagues lived and worked in the United States. So Amelia and George made a big turkey dinner in solidarity with her American colleagues. She made turkey and mashed potatoes, and even a nice batch of cranberry sauce. They’d have turkey in the freezer for months!

“What are you thankful for this year?” George asked Amelia.

“The same thing I was thankful for back in October,” Amelia said. “I’m thankful for you, George.”

George gave his wife a fond smile. “Do you know what I’m thankful for?”

“What, George?”

“A wife who doesn’t mind if I put on a pound or two,” he said.

“As long as we’re eating together,” she said. “Besides, I like you with some padding. You’re such a strong frog, and if you get a little heavier, I just feel a little safer. More turkey, George?”

“Yes, please!”

And they had plans to put their feet up and doze the whole evening away.
