Expecting a pollywog

Monday morning, Amelia and George went to a doctor’s appointment for an ultrasound. On their way back from that appointment, they stopped for ice cream, and for a few minutes they just sat in silence.

“So only one pollywog…” George said at last.

“Only one… You know, triplets and quadruplets run in my family,” Amelia said.

“Mine, too. Sometimes quints,” George replied.

They were quite stunned to be only expecting one little baby, but they were still very thankful.

“And we have until October until the baby is born,” Amelia reminded him.

“October! That’s not much time at all,” George said. “We need a crib, and baby supplies, and you will need to take time off of work. That means we have to save now….”

Amelia took another lick of her ice cream, tuning out George’s running list of things that needed doing. She wasn’t worried about that. They’d figure it out. She was just remembering the picture on the ultrasound screen of the little bean that made all of this ever so real.

George was working out in the bathroom again when Amelia knocked on the door.

“George, I need the bathroom…” Amelia had that sick to her stomach sound in her voice again.

George put his barbell aside and opened the door for her. Amelia rushed inside and hovered over the the toilet.

“George?” she said woozily.

“Yes, Amelia?”

“Can you put that weight away before we trip over it?”

George startled. “Oh… oh…” He wasn’t sure what to say.

“You don’t have to work out in the bathroom, you know,” she said. “You can work out anywhere. It’s kind of inconvenient when you do it here.”

“How did you know?” he asked.

“I peeked through the key hole because I thought you were in trouble,” she replied, straightening. “I think my stomach is a bit better.”

“I’m sorry I hid that from you,” George said. “I don’t have any other secrets. It’s just that you were so proud of my naturally sporty physique.”

“Oh, George–” she started, and then she leaned over the toilet again. “Ugh… I can’t stand up yet…”

George felt silly now for trying to hide it. When frogs were married, they weren’t supposed to hide anything.

“And one more thing, just to make sure there are no secrets at all…” George said.

“What’s that?” Amelia moaned.

“Your mother wants to do a surprise baby shower for you,” he said. “And… well…. that’s the end of my secrets. And you can’t tell your mother I told you!”

Amelia sat in front of her computer snacking on potato chips. She normally enjoyed a can of chips, but these days they were just to die for! It was either the pregnancy, or the chip company had changed their recipe, because she just couldn’t stop!

She was having a video chat with her mother.

“How are you feeling?” her mother asked.

“Hungry, mostly,” Amelia said. “And a little emotional. George brought me chips and I cried with happiness.”

“That sounds normal,” her mother replied.

“I’m also scared, Mom,” Amelia admitted. “I’m scared of how things might change with me and George. We’re only newly married. A baby will make everything different between us.”

“That’s true,” her mother replied. “Things will change, but you’ll work on them together, so you’ll change together. When you become parents you’ll be completely different frogs! But no one on this green earth will love that pollywog as much as you and George will.”

‘Do you think we’ll be okay?” Amelia asked.

“We’ve gotten to know George pretty well,” her mother replied. “And I’m positive that the two of you will be just fine.”

That was what Amelia needed to hear.
