Easter Monday just happened to fall on April Fool’s Day, which made Easter dinner at Amelia’s parents’ place a rather rowdy event!
Amelia’s Uncle Tom kept using a hand buzzer on people when he shook their hands, and Amelia’s Aunt Verna was looking up the April Fools jokes on social media on her phone. Amelia’s mother kept thinking that real news was April Fools, and Amelia’s father was earnestly googling everything so that he wouldn’t be fooled.
Amelia’s Uncle Tom asked George to pull his finger, and George was wise to that, and declined.
Then George went into Amelia’s father’s office, and he saw the magnifying glass. He knew a fun April Fool’s joke to play on Amelia. So he got behind the magnifying glass to make himself look huge, and he called for Amelia.
“Amelia!” he called.
Amelia came into the room.
“Raarr!” George said.
“Oh, George!” Amelia laughed. “You’re silly! But that isn’t an April Fool’s joke. An April Fool’s joke is like…” And she thought for a moment. “It’s like me telling you that we aren’t having one pollywog, we’re having three!”
George blinked at her. “What?”
“That would be an April Fool’s joke,” Amelia said.
“So… are we having three?” he asked.
“That’s the fun!” Amelia said. “You just don’t know!”
And just then Amelia’s mother called her to help with something, and Amelia dashed off again.
THREE? Was that a joke, or was that real? Now, George wasn’t sure!

Amelia’s family could be a handful. George’s family did not play April Fool’s jokes. And suddenly all of the fun and mayhem was starting to feel very tiring.
“George, are you all right?” Amelia asked when she found him sitting by himself on a shelf.
“I’m doing the math,’ George said.
“What math?” she asked.
“If we had three pollywogs, that’s three cribs, diapers for three, and I don’t know where we’ll squeeze them all in our apartment!”
“George, it was a joke,” Amelia said. “We aren’t having three. I’m sorry. That was really cruel of me. Sometimes I get carried away. You were at the ultrasound appointment. We’re having one. Don’t worry like that.”
George deflated a little with a sigh of relief.
“Oh, George,” Amelia said, and she put her head on his shoulder. “I’m sorry. April Fools is supposed to be fun, and I think I went too far.”
“It’s okay,” George said. “I should have known. I WAS at the ultrasound appointment. I’m just not used to this.”
“It’s time to eat,” Amelia said. “And I’d better warn you that the little fly pies have hot peppers in them, and whatever you do, don’t eat the cookies that Uncle Tom made!”
Amelia’s family was much different from George’s, but he did love them. They were rambunctious and fun. And he had Amelia to warn him away from the worst of it.
“Let’s go eat,’ George said.

One evening that week, Amelia and Patricia sat down for a tea together. They worked together very closely but sometimes it was nice to just enjoy a chat that had nothing to do with books and work.
“…and that was my Easter weekend,” Amelia concluded.
“My goodness!” Patricia said. “You were busy! Has George recovered from the fun at your parents’ place?”
“I think so,” Amelia replied. “Mostly. My Uncle Tom did manage to trick him one last time with a trick piece of gum when we were leaving.”
“Your Uncle Tom is a handful!” Patricia laughed.
“If you ever meet my Uncle Tom, never, EVER pull his finger!” Amelia said.
“I’ll keep that in mind,” Patricia chuckled.
Patricia and Amelia chatted some more. Patricia told about her Easter weekend–the candy they got for their son, the dinner they had with her parents, the lovely church service. Patricia’s Easter and been much quieter than Amelia’s!
“I’d better get home to George,” Amelia said, looking at the clock.
“And Mr. Johns is waiting for me to watch a show with him,” Patricia said. “This was so nice, Amelia.”
“I’ll send you your edits first thing in the morning!” Amelia said.
As Amelia headed back to the apartment, she couldn’t help but smile. She had a good life, and she had good people to share it with.
