Dear Reader, we killed it.

Mr. Johns and I have wanted a Bonzai tree for the longest time. One year on our anniversary, my husband went to the plant nursery and came home with a little Jade plant with promise. We were going to prune it, and shape it, and lovingly grow it into a gorgeous Bonzia tree (with the help of Youtube videos, of course.)

Little Jade plants, it turns out, are more finicky than we thought. But also, Mr. Johns and I were never quite on the same page. You couldn’t convince me that the plant didn’t need just a drop of water in its dry soil, and you couldn’t convince Mr. Johns that a plant didn’t do better outside. So together, between the two of us, we loved that plant to death.

We were both rather heartbroken! It had been a metaphor for our marriage, in our eyes, and when you go and kill something that you proudly wrote the date of your anniversary on… yeah.

So this year, I was grocery shopping and found this little tree. It’s tiny. It’s cute. It’s hopefully more hearty!

I won’t be so forward as to label it with our anniversary this time, but maybe if we ignore it, don’t over water it, and keep it inside no matter what, it will have a chance to flourish on its own.

We shall see! As for Mr. Johns and I, our time is probably better spent cuddled up on the couch together watching a Christmas movie. We’re happiest when ignored and left alone together, too. ๐Ÿ™‚
