Lessons from Amish Life in Modern Cooking

Amish life is appealing for it simplicity and peacefulness, but we often think it would be too hard to actually live that way. And maybe it is–no electricity, no motor vehicles… But there are some ways to incorporate Amish sensibilities into our modern lives!

The Amish cook most of their food from scratch. Busy Amish women will put together big meals to feed hungry husbands and children. They cook for weddings and events, and they are known for their hospitality.

While cooking everything from scratch (unless you have serious allergies, like we do) can be daunting, don’t be intimidated! It isn’t necessary. There are a few ways to bring some Amish cooking into your home right now.

~Learn how to cook one dish from scratch that you really enjoy. Just one! Learn how to make it well, and make it often.

~Bring your signature dish to the next family gathering where everyone is contributing. Let your family know that you’ve learned a new dish, and let them enjoy it, too!

~Cook from scratch one day a week, and make sure there’s enough for leftovers. Not only will it save you money, but you’ll have food in the fridge for a couple of days to save you time later.

~Freeze portions for meals later. It’s an easy way to make that home cooking last, and stretch a grocery budget!

You can even tell people the secret ingredient is love.

  3. I lived in apt. upstairs of my Italian grandparents for my first five years. My grandmother babysat me while she cooked so I learned to make a few of her signature dishes. This Saturday the women in my church want to have a real spaghetti meal and demonstration. I make grandma’s spaghetti from scratch. I can make her pasta, Italian sausage, meatballs and braciole from scratch. I have demonstrated the pasta to them before so I am not doing that again but using store bought pasta with the scratch sauce and meats. Sometimes I use my canned tomatoes and basil from my garden too. I am the only cousin who learned my grandma’s spaghetti.

    1. That is just amazing! Homemade always tastes better and your Italian cooking sounds delicious!
