Hunted on the Trail: a manly man and dogs you’d die for

Dana Mentink’s Hunted on the Trail is a great read where the dogs steal the show! Honestly, for the first half of the book, I cared more about these pooches than I did the people!

Chloe is a bloodhound tracker, and Pudge is an obese, untrained mutt who has the biggest heart. I thoroughly enjoyed their antics and fell entirely in love with them. When Vance–the beefy hero–was trudging through the woods with Pudge in a baby sling, I laughed out loud!

With a killer out-thinking Vance and Steph out in the wilderness, their second chance romance still gets a chance to blossom. One thing I really liked about Mentink’s writing (besides those adorable dogs!) was her ability to write a loveable and realistic man. Sure, he’s fictional, but I have never seen a male character written by a female author who rang so true. The way he took small touches on his arm to mean more than they did, or how he pieced together small victories with Steph as hope for a future together, was just so… male! And I loved it!

From the banter to his earnest pleading that he roll himself outside so he could bleed on the porch instead of the wood floor inside…. It’s the perfect mix of suspense and humour. If you haven’t read this one yet, do yourself a favor and pick it up!
